UCC Weekly update 8th – 19th July 2019

The Uganda Communications Commission (the Commission) participated in the Global Symposium for Regulators (GSR) in Port Vila, Vanuatu represented by Mr Godfrey Mutabazi the Executive Director – UCC and Ms Irene Kaggwa Sewankambo the Director Engineering and Communications Infrastructure at the Commission. https://wp.me/paP880-kX


The Commission hosted students from the ISESCO Camp of Excellence for mentoring girls in Human Development. The students from Sudan, Nigeria, and Uganda had a fruitful engagement aimed at promoting a culture of excellence and nature the development of responsible digital citizens.


The Commission and Makerere University College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology are making the last call for papers for the 5th National Conference on Communications scheduled to take place from 10th -11th October 2019 in Kampala. The Commission is at various stages of investigating three television stations following complaints on questionable broadcast content that purportedly contravenes the established legal and regulatory framework. Details of the investigations are restricted to avoid undue influence on the ongoing processes.


The Commission hosted the UBC Board of Directors who met with the Commission’s Top Management Team during orientation on the regulation of the Communications Sector.


The Commission under the Rural Communications Development Fund (RCDF) conducted needs validation workshops as a result of the baseline study of 2018. The study sought to establish the extent and patterns of access and usage of Information and Communication Technologies by Persons with Disabilities (PWDs) in Uganda and engage with educators on the sustainability of the internet connectivity to schools program under RCDF. https://wp.me/paP880-lt


The Commission published Mobile Data Comparison rates for mobile/wireless internet plans in the sector, cutting through the clutter to enable ease of price comparison by consumers. https://wp.me/paP880-lF


The Commission is engaging with the Ministry of ICT and National Guidance on the new policy and coordination proposals from the recently concluded UCC – FSDU Data ecosystem inquiry.  This includes the next steps on improving data competition and how best to leverage new data trails for innovation and service deepening.
