UCC ready for global AIDS conference

Uganda Communications Commission is proud to be associated with Uganda’s successful bid to host the International Conference on AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) in Africa (ICASA) in 2021.

To win, Uganda beat off stiff competition from Kenya in the final race, having earlier prevailed over Nigeria, Zambia and Tunisia.

UCC’s role was to offer technical backing for the bid, following an invitation by Uganda AIDS Commission to meet the pre-selection assessment team.

On behalf of the Director-General, Uganda AIDS Commission, Dr Vincent Bagambe wrote to the UCC Executive Director Mr Godfrey Mutabazi on 23rd September 2019, inviting the Commission to meet the ICASA assessment team.

“Given the important role of your sector in the national response to HIV and AIDS, it is essential that you meet this team to discuss Uganda’s preparedness to host ICASA 2021,” Dr Bagambe wrote.

Among other things, the UCC technical staff who met the ICASA team in Kampala on 1st October 2019 demonstrated Uganda’s capacity to effectively handle the communications needs of the 10,000 or so guests that are expected to attend the conference.

Countries interested in hosting the event were rated in terms of their infrastructure, political commitment, conference facilities, transport logistics, security and political stability, among other factors.

Besides sharing the country’s experiences, achievements and challenges in the fight against HIV/AIDS, the conference which is due in December 2021 presents potentially lucrative opportunities in tourism, trade and investment.
